Rimmel Stay Satin Liquid Lipstick - Road Testing Long Wear Lipstick Series

Rimmel Stay Satin Liquid Lipstick

Road Testing Long Wear Lipstick Series

Yes! I know this second part of the Road Testing Long Wear Lipstick Series is long overdue. But to be honest, I did love the Aldi Lacura lipstick so much that I have been using it religiously since the last blog. But here I am again, testing some more lipsticks for you all in the name of (pinup) science!

One essential item for all pinups is red lipstick. There are so many on the market and everyone will tell you their favourite, go to bold red lip. You can go through the adventure of trial and error until you find your perfect shade that provides the optimal wear and comfort for your price range. OR you can learn from my adventures (and fails) in this multi-part Road Testing Long Wear Lipstick Blog Series! I will try out different red lipsticks and rate them accordingly. I aim to offer a range of long wear lipsticks.

Why just long wear lipsticks? We are vintage lovers in the modern world, we sometimes don't have the time and effort to be constantly reapplying our lipstick to keep ourselves primped and preen like our inspiring women of the 1940's and 1950's. We can also take advantage of modern advancements in makeup development and have a red lipstick that will stay on and be transfer proof for hours - or so the packaging states!

Here are my five criteria, which each will be rated out of 5

(1 =poor, 5 =good):

  1. Application
  2. Transfer (initial and after 1 hour)
  3. Cost
  4. Wear throughout the day/ Eating and Drinking
  5. The next day

Each lipstick will be given a total score out of 25.

Here we go again!

Rimmel Stay Satin Liquid Lip in 'Redical'

So this was a total impulse purchase for me. It was strategically placed at a front counter at my local Chemist Warehouse and it was 1/2 price. How could I not? The colour from the tube looked to be a more blue based red shade, which is my type of red.

These liquid lipsticks are advertised as "Loud Satin, That Never Fades. High-intensity liquid satin colour. Long-lasting comfortable wear for up to 8 hours."

Here is how I rate the 'Rimmel Stay Satin Liquid Lipstick':

1. Application

This liquid lipstick has the usual doe foot applicator.  I guess it did feel like 'satin' when applying. The colour was vivid and had good coverage. I applied two coats to build up the intensity to the colour more like the tube. My lips felt moisturised and the lipstick had a lightweight feel.

I was pretty impressed with the ease of application and the overall feel of the lipstick.

2. Transfer

I applied the lipstick at roughly 8am. It was understandably still transferring within the first hour and had a near complete lipstick imprint at about 9am.

All good, I thought. But I continued to get lipstick transferring to my teeth up to 2 hours after application! Even after my little trick of 'sucking the finger' to get rid of the inner layer of lipstick from your lips that is most likely to transfer to your teeth.

I think I have been spoiled and grown accustomed to non transferring red lipstick. But this continued to transfer all, day, long.

Rating = 1 out of 5

Now if this was any 'regular' lipstick I would not be so harsh as transfer is part of their nature. But as this has been marketed as 'long lasting, never fades'. I believe it should therefore not be so easily transferable.

3. Cost

As I said at the start, I did purchase this at half price. So it only cost me $7.40 instead of the RRP of $14.95*. I feel as though this $15 price point for these 'drug store' brands is the average.

Rating = 3 out of 5

4. Wear throughout the day/Eating and drinking

Now as I said before, I am used to having a red lipstick that stays put throughout the day. This was not enjoyable to wear. There was red lipstick everywhere, on my drink bottle, on my face from smudging, on my food, on my hands.

However, the colour on my lips did seem to stay put for the first 4 hours or so, but the corners and top lip were starting to fuzz.

And this was my water bottle at 3pm, after 7 hours of wear!

By 5pm, I knew it was all over. The colour had faded all patchy and all lines had bled out. My lips were starting to feel very dry and the lipstick was starting to leave a tacky residue on my lips.

With no surprise, almost all of the colour was gone during dinner leaving my lips dry and sore.

Maybe it is hard to suddenly adapt to a transferring lipstick. But this was a day (a busy day working!) that I wished I had not worn any lipstick as I was constantly cleaning up after it.

5. The next day

Now one of the most important things to me is the health of my lips. You don't want to have amazing red lips one day, and cracked dry and sore lips the next. Beauty should not be that painful! And yes, I do sacrifice a lot in the name of scientific observation and experimentation. Needless to say, I was quick to reach for the Pawpaw ointment first thing in the morning.

They aren't sooo bad (as in fully cracked and bleeding, because yes I have been there before!).

Total Score = 12 out of 25

You can guess that I will not be reaching for this lipstick for any long time wear. However, I do still like the colour so I might use it for those rare occasions where it will be for the sake of a photoshoot and it will be swiftly removed afterwards.
